Minnesota Senator William Windom unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for President in 1880. Windom resigned from the Senate and was appointed as Secretary of the Treasury by President James Garfield on March 8, 1881. He resigned from this position on November 13, 1881. Later, he was once again appointed as Secretary of the Treasury, this time by President Benjamin Harrison. He served in that capacity from March 7, 1889 until his death in office on January 29, 1891. In remembrance, his portrait was placed on the Series of 1891 $2 Silvers.
