Unique Fr. 229*A $1 Black Eagle Solid Star

Fr. 229*A $1 1899 Solid Star Silver Certificate PMG Very Fine 20.
We are extremely pleased to offer this evening to the collecting fraternity the unique Black Eagle Solid Star Note which has to be considered the highlight of the Doug Murray collection. This is a note that was unknown until 2010 when a well-known paper money dealer, quite literally, ferreted it "out of the weeds." Fortunately, for Doug (and not for his checkbook), the dealer was quite taken by the certainly unusual nature of the Solid Star and immediately contacted the top expert of Large Size Stars, which, of course, was Doug. Quickly realizing its importance, Doug immediately negotiated a deal for this unique piece. While some collectors might consider this an error note, close examination of the star itself reveals it is identical in size and characteristics to the stars used at the end of the serial numbers on the Treasury (or Coin) Notes issued between 1890 and 1893, the only difference being that the star on the Black Eagle is blue rather than the Treasury Note's red color.

Presumably, when the decision was made by the BEP in 1910 to make separate replacement notes, a small quantity of Vernon-McClung replacements were run off the press using an old star slug from the Treasury Note era, thereby creating the solid star notes. Since tonight's offering bears serial number *1702B, that quantity could have been as small as just 2000 notes. However, after that brief run, a decision was made at the BEP to opt for the use of the hollow star which was then put into production until the end of the Large Size era in 1929. This piece has seen some circulation and has acquired some very minor internal tears but any such flaws pale in comparison to the rarity and desirability of this unique specimen.

While it is certainly possible that another solid star note could surface in the future, with a print run of as low as 2000, the odds of that occurring are infinitesimally small. Therefore, tonight likely presents the only opportunity for today's generation of collectors to acquire a solid star note within their lifetimes. Any estimate for such a unique piece is just a guess so we will be conservative and let the bidders decide tonight.
