Unique Late Printed Fr. 229 $1 Black Eagle
Fr. 229 $1 1899 Silver Certificate PMG Choice Extremely Fine
45.A bright, well margined, and embossed Black Eagle that is from a very small late print run of notes with the Vernon-McClung signature combination. According to the BEP records, the official high serial number for the Fr. 229/229a Black Eagles was Y51404000. However, research in Washington by Doug Murray and Peter Huntoon has confirmed that an additional serial number run of Y68412001 to Y68992000 was delivered on August 31, 1911 with the Vernon-McClung signatures. To date, just one Fr. 229 and six Fr. 229a's have been confirmed to have survived from this short print run. This lot is the one Fr. 229 example known to exist from that late print run and it is a nice one that exhibits only light, even wear. A wonderful note for the large size specialist.
