Description

Problem-Free 1879 Refunding Certificate

Fr. 214 $10 1879 Refunding Certificate PMG Very Fine 30.
Refunding Certificates were created in 1879 as a means of encouraging small investments. The certificates, which were sold through Post Offices, paid 4% interest until the payment of interest was terminated in 1907 when each certificate had a value of $21.30. This second variety was payable to the bearer rather than to a specific person, with the census currently recording 173 examples. Our most recent auction of this Friedberg number (with the local blue security stain) in this condition saw the note cross the auction block to realize $7,200 as part of our 2025 GACC U.S. Currency Signature Auction. Months earlier, an example without the blue security stain, like this note, brought $4,560 as part of our 2025 CSNS U.S. Currency Signature Auction.
