Description

Boldly Printed AU $10 Refunding Certificate

Fr. 214 $10 1879 Refunding Certificate PMG About Uncirculated 53.
Emitted under the Act of February 26, 1879, Refunding Certificates such as the charming piece offered here were intended to popularize government securities. They bore four percent interest, but accrued without a stated end date, incentivizing holders to keep them for extended periods of time. We have not been afforded the opportunity to auction this particular certificate previously. It was first recorded in the numismatic community in the 1950s when it called the collection of Dallas oilman Robert F. Schermerhorn home. With handsome, bright blue tinted paper, well printed design details, and little evidence of circulation, this example presents itself as a striking representative of a sought after type. In October 2025, a PMG 45 graded note of this number crossed our desk and realized $8,400. PMG comments on small tears.
