Description

Lovely Rainbow Jackass $10

Fr. 96 $10 1869 Legal Tender PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.
A lovely example of this always extremely popular Rainbow Jackass $10, we originally auctioned this piece at our January 2001 Orlando auction. The inks are bold, and it has earned the EPQ grade modifier. This $10 is part of a run of mostly similarly graded Uncirculated notes. It is a plate letter C example with three broad margins revealing a partial plate number at top center. The back possesses uncanny bull's-eye centering for the design as all four margins are at 3mm each in width. This example last crossed our auction block in October 2021, where it fetched $8,400. Since then, we have offered one other Fr. 96 piece at the PMG 64 EPQ grade. It realized $9,600 in January 2022. Tonight's offering should easily challenge, if not surpass, that benchmark figure. As far as the note's nickname goes, when the note is turned upside down, the eagle at the bottom of the note takes on the appearance of a jackass. Since this was during the Republican Grant Administration, speculation rests on a Democrat engraver at the BEP producing this engraving illusion.
