Not a Single Example Graded Higher by PMG
Fr. 41 $2 1862 Legal Tender PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.The earliest recorded appearance of this gorgeous $2 Legal was on a 1987 Midwest dealer's price list and its next appearance was on a 1989 East Coast dealer's price list. This $2 did not return to the collecting community at large for nearly thirty years, until it participated in a 2018 auction. Our consignor won this note out of our January 2019 FUN auction, where it received a winning bid of $26,400. Interestingly, another PMG 66 EPQ example also realized $26,400 at auction in 2020. That was the last time a Fr. 41 at this high grade or higher participated at auction. In fact, PMG has graded merely two examples equal and not a single Fr. 41 higher. That fact has remained constant since our 2019 description. The inks of the note in this lot are dark and produce a nice contrast against the white paper. It is truly a superior note for this third party grade.
