Fr. 16d $1 1862 Legal Tender PMG Choice Very Fine 35.A new Friedberg number that was not added until its inclusion in the 22nd (2021) and latest edition of Paper Money of the United States by Arthur L. and Ira S. Friedberg. Friedberg 16d consists of Series 166-70, no ABNCo monogram, a green patent date at right, and the signatures were overprinted for these five series and not engraved. Overprinted signatures of Register of the Treasury L.E. Chittenden and Treasurer of the United States F.E. Spinner are thicker, while the engraved signatures on the earlier varieties are thinner. As a new Friedberg number, PMG has graded only eleven examples, with only a single Fr. 16d graded higher than the attractive VF ace in this lot. Our only previous experience with this Friedberg number before tonight was when we auctioned a PMG Fine 12 for $2,400 in May 2022.
