Description
Fr. 16c $1 1862 Legal Tender PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ.This attractive plate letter D ace from Series 241 with serial number 44616 possesses both paper originality and ideal inks. Serial number 44684-D is also in this auction session. The portrait is of Secretary of the Treasury Salmon Chase, who was part of President Abraham Lincoln's cabinet from 1861-64. During those Civil War years, there were two great changes in American financial policy. The first was the issue of Federal paper money and the second was the establishment of a national banking system. Chase left this position on June 30, 1864. Lincoln later nominated Chase for Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on December 6, 1864. He was sworn into office on December 15, 1864 and served until his death on May 7, 1873. However, his likeness was placed on Series 1862 $1 Legals during his lifetime and he lives on in the field of paper money collecting.
