Fr. 167a $100 1863 Legal Tender PCGS Choice About New
55PPQ.Serial number 87471-C adorns this rare and attractive New Series 1 $100 Legal with a provenance that stretches all the way back to being lot 37 in the first auction session of The Albert A. Grinnell Collection held on November 25, 1944 by Barney Bluestone. This Spread Eagle note was purchased by William Donlon that night, who was one of the very few who personally attended all seven main sessions of the Grinnell collection. Mr. Donlon was rightfully very proud of this note and when he published his large size paper money reference book, United States Large Size Paper Money 1861 to 1923, this $100 was illustrated on the front and back cover for all six editions, 1968-79. Donlon also became a paper money dealer in 1961 and conducted twelve auctions between 1971-78. When he auctioned his research and personal collection on May 22, 1971, it was lot 673. Our current offering was the only front and back cover note for the catalog. It would not reappear at auction until 2016, where it was in the final Memphis International Paper Money show auction and graced the front cover of the auction catalog then as well.
The Track & Price census population for Fr. 167a is only 23 serial numbers, and that figure has increased only by one since 2016. However, five of those examples have found their way into the collections of the Smithsonian Institution (2), the ANA Museum, and one each in the collections of the Federal Reserve Banks of Chicago and Kansas City. That leaves a mere 18 examples to satisfy the needs of collectors. The last example to cross the auction block was a PCGS 63 that realized $264,000 in 2021. That example is graded a little higher, but we are offering tonight a note that can trace its roots back to the most fabled collection in our numismatic niche. After tonight, this great note will enter only its fifth collection in nearly 100 years.
