Description

1862 $100 Spread Eagle

Fr. 165a $100 1862 Legal Tender PCGS Apparent Very Fine 30.
Lot 16910 in our most recent Central States Signature Auction featured a Fr. 167a $100 1863 Legal Tender in a PMG Very Fine 20 Net holder. That piece, which realized $63,250, had repaired splits, much like this piece which has some edge restorations, splits, and a repair. These are common attributes of early Legal Tenders due to the quality of the paper used by the ABNCo. and NBNCo. However, the most important portion of the note, the Spread Eagle perched at left, is also the note's most vivid and uninterrupted portions of the design. Surviving Friedberg 167a's outnumber this Friedberg number by a factor of 2 to 1 and for the serious type collector, this note is a necessity as it features the first of two redemption clauses used on the back of these Legal Tender $100s.
