Newly Discovered Fr. 163 - One of Eight Known

Fr. 163 $50 1880 Legal Tender PMG Very Fine 25.
Large denomination notes were out of the grasp of most of the public, this note in particular representing almost a month and a half of an average person's salary when it was issued. Far fewer of these denominations were needed in circulation, and the print runs were comparatively small. Ten Friedberg numbers make up the different signature combinations and seal varieties for the Series 1880 $50 Legal Tender notes. Fr. 163, which features the signatures of Blanche K. Bruce and Ellis H. Roberts, was issued in the smallest quantity - just 28,000 notes. Their tenure together lasted less than four months between December 1897 and March of 1898, leaving only a small issuing window. With the discovery of this example, there are just eight known pieces with two permanently impounded in Federal collections. Auction appearances are rare, with just four notes having ever been offered at public sale. The most recent comparable price would be a PMG Extremely Fine 40 note that sold at auction three years ago for $28,800. This example is evenly circulated and problem free with no single fold distracting from the eye appeal.
