Incredible Color for the Grade - PMG Very Fine 20 EPQ

Fr. 151 $50 1869 Legal Tender PMG Very Fine 20 EPQ.
A well margined plate letter A $50 Legal, it possesses incredible color for the grade. This is a one Friedberg number type and is always in demand due to its low population figure and favorable design. The gorgeous color makes it highly desirable, and the VF 20 grade makes it somewhat affordable. Notes at the VF 20 level seldom earn the EPQ qualifier as PMG does not have a "20 EPQ" column in their Population Report. We are convinced in this case that the note won its positive accolade for both margins and color. Rainbow $50s are rare and extremely popular, with only 70 different serial numbers enumerated in the Track & Price Census, and that includes the piece in this lot. However, we know ten of those serials are locked away in the following institution and government collections. The ANA and the Smithsonian each have a single Fr. 151. Also, these Federal Reserve Banks have eight examples in total in their collections, Philadelphia, Richmond (3), Chicago (2), and St. Louis (2.) Also, the 70 population figure includes pieces that have been reported by serial number, but never offered at auction. The figure may very well include a few contemporary counterfeits, which were some of the best that were ever executed. In closing, we have in this lot a rare type note that is a premium example for the grade.
