Unique Fr. 150b $50 1863 Legal - Ex: Amon Carter

Fr. 150b $50 1863 Legal Tender PCGS Very Fine 30.
This impressive mid-grade New Series 1 note with two imprints of both the ABNCo and the National BNCo was once owned by Amon Carter, Jr. Amon was a flamboyant and wealthy collector. His United States paper money collection went to auction in 1985 and 1986. This $50 found its way onto a 1986 price list, then to a 1993 auction, and from there to a 1995 auction. Its next trip to the auction block was at the last Memphis International Paper Money Show held in June 2016. This note had long been regarded as a Fr. 150a. However, with the 2010 19th edition of Friedberg's Paper Money of the United States, Fr. 150a was further refined by having the notes split amongst two different patent dates that are found at upper left. Notes with the "April 28th, 1863" date remained as Fr. 150a, while notes with the "30 JUNE 1857" date, like the example in this lot, became Fr. 150b. At the time of the Memphis June 2016 auction, it was the first and only example designated as a Fr. 150b in Track & Price. Eight years later, it is still the only Fr. 150b note documented in Track & Price. The recently released 23rd edition of Friedberg just landed in our offices. That new and updated reference still states, "1 known." We can all watch at HA.com/Currency when this unique note's lot number is announced from the podium and easily breaks the six-figure barrier.
