1863 $20 Legal Tender PCGS Gem New 65PPQ
Fr. 126b $20 1863 Legal Tender PCGS Gem New 65PPQ.A beautiful example of this early $20 Legal Tender note that we last offered in our 2009 Long Beach auction. At that time, we said: "This gorgeous note falls right in the middle of a short run of lovely uncirculated notes. This piece displays perfect paper originality visible even through the PCGS holder, excellent margins all the way around, and color of the inks and paper that are the equal of the day the note was printed. It is easily as nice as any Fr. 126b that we have sold in the past and easily merits the Gem New 65PPQ grade given by PCGS. Although a fair number of Fr. 126b's have been graded as uncirculated in the past, truly high grade examples are quite rare." At that time, in a much more subdued market, it sold for $17,825. However, in recent years, the market has come to appreciate the true rarity of these early notes in high grade, as the last PCGS Gem 65PPQ example to cross the auction block fetched over $35,000.
