Description

Fr. 212d $50 Three-Year Interest Bearing Note

Fr. 212d $50 1865 Interest Bearing Note Very Fine-Extremely Fine. Authorized by the act of March 3, 1865 and issued on July 15, 1865. Nine notes are recorded in the census, two of which are in government hands and two of which are counterfeit and don't belong in the listing, leaving only five notes available to collectors. This piece is tied for the finest among them. Only one example of the five available to collectors has its coupons and that note changed hands at the Memphis 2000 auction for $181,500. This note is fully its equal for both grade and appearance, although only a tiny fragment of the final coupon remains. When we last sold this note in May of 1997, it realized $38,500. Since that time, we sold a lower-grade piece, also without coupons, in January of 2000 for $41,250. This note has vibrant colors, with the only restoration being a virtually undetectable strengthening at one place in the bronze surcharge. With its extreme rarity, high grade and great eye appeal, we would not be at all surprised to see this note run considerably past our estimate on this more sophisticated market for important pieces.
