Fr. 212 $50 1864 Interest Bearing Note Fine+. One of only seven examples known, this beauty was first sold as Lot 230 of the first Grinnell sale in 1944. It was graded Very Fine there, and it has been graded Fine-Very Fine and also Very Good at other times. It's a bit better than full Fine to our eyes, bright, well margined and clean but for some light soil at the left end of the back. One of the known pieces is in the Smithsonian, and a second untraced example is canceled, leaving only five for the collecting public. The only high-grade piece among them has been off the market since 1963. In January of 2001, we sold a similarly graded piece that had retained two of its coupons for $63,250. This note will certainly not equal that price, but it could reach or exceed . . .
