Description

Tied for Highest Graded & Friedberg Plate Note

Fr. 197a $20 1863 Interest Bearing Note PMG Very Fine 30.
The Track & Price Census reports 25 of this Friedberg number surviving which we know has increased only by three since 1997. This example has an issued date of April 5, 1864. It is the plate note in the Standard Catalog of United States Paper Money, but has had very few forays into the numismatic marketplace. The first recorded appearance was on a dealer's price list in 1975. This note did not make a public appearance again until the last auction held at the Memphis International Paper Money Show in 2016. It has excellent color for the grade and has recently been crossed over from PCGS to PMG. It is currently tied with only one other Fr. 197a for the highest grade awarded by PMG. It has restorations, which is usual for this class of notes. The restorations appear, with backlighting through the third party holder, to be only strengthening of two vertical folds. It still remains the nicest Fr. 197a to appear at auction since 2018.
