Description

High Grade Old Post Office Survivor

Fr. 1225h $10,000 1900 Gold Certificate PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
These notes have a storied past. A five alarm fire broke out in the Washington, D.C. "Old Post Office" on December 13, 1935. Firefighters tossed many of these notes, along with other combustible material, from the windows of a large filing room on the sixth floor. Lucky onlookers on the street below were able to pick the notes up and spirit them away. This is an attractive Uncirculated example of this unredeemable $10,000 note, used only for internal Treasury and Federal Reserve Bank transactions. This piece sports the usual hole punch/roulette cancel for this Friedberg number, and has very light damp staining as a result of the fire. Of the 410 examples of this Friedberg number presently registered in the PMG Population Report, only 5 examples have higher grades.
