Description

Fr. 1225c $10,000 1900 Gold Certificate PCGS Very Fine 25.
A scarcer Friedberg number for this unredeemable design is offered in this lot, with Track & Price listing only 41 serial numbers as compared to 332 for Fr. 1225h. The usual hole punch cancels are present and the third party back label mentions edge and internal tears, stains, and small rust stains. The staining is probably due to this note being at the five alarm Washington, DC, Old Post Office fire of December 13-14, 1935. Firemen tossed many of these notes out of the windows of a sixth floor filing room in order to deny combustible material to the blaze. However, one lucky witness to this conflagration was able to take home a commemorative of the event that eventually joined the numismatic community.
