Fr. 1218g $1,000 1882 Gold Certificate PCGS Extremely Fine
40.A meager four examples are documented on this Friedberg number, but only two of those are available to collectors as the other two reside in the holdings of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and the Smithsonian Institution. These facts have remained the same dating back to 1987 when this note first appeared to the collecting community due to the hard work of coin dealer Fred Werner. The example we offer tonight is by far the nicest of the two Fr. 1218g notes and the other collectable example has not been seen at auction since 2003. We have auctioned a single example of this number and it was this very note at our Winter 1999 auction as part of the Dr. Lawrence Cookson Gold Certificate Collection. Our inspection today leaves us with the same favorable impression as it did then when we described it as having excellent ink colors and that includes the bold orange back that could not look any nicer. We would also like to add that this plate letter D note has four more than ample margins, light folds, and traces of embossing remain at back center. This $1,000 Gold last appeared at auction in 2018 and realized $576,000. We have seen prices only increase since then for rare items in high grade and fully expect that figure to be surpassed early in the bidding as a note of this rarity and condition is certainly worthy of a strong bid.
