One of Two Known Fr. 1218e $1,000 1882 Gold Certificates in Private Hands

Fr. 1218e $1,000 1882 Gold Certificate PMG Very Fine 30.
The Fr. 1218e design features a large portrait of Alexander Hamilton at right while the striking orange back features a smaller vignette of an eagle with an olive branch and arrows clutched in its talons holding a ribbon inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM standing on a fasces. A total of 8,000 Rosecrans-Nebeker notes were issued, with five survivors presently residing in the census. That is a bit misleading in that two examples are in the Federal Reserve Banks of Chicago and San Francisco, and a third with serial number C24623C was last seen serving as the plate note in the 1955-2006 editions of the Friedberg Paper Money of the United States. It has not been seen for decades and its present whereabouts are unknown. This leaves us with two examples known in private hands. Not surprisingly, our last auction of this note as part of our 2022 CSNS U.S. Currency Signature Auction saw this note realize $492,000 when the hammer fell. Tonight's result is expected to be in the same neighborhood. There is a minor restoration running from Alexander Hamilton's shoulder to his ear.
