Description

Striking $500 1882 Gold Certificate

Fr. 1216b $500 1882 Gold Certificate PMG Very Fine 30.
The 1882 $500 Gold Certificate has a compelling design, with Abraham Lincoln's portrait the focal point of the face and a wonderful eagle and flag design the centerpiece of the bright orange back. A total of 40,000 Fr. 1216b $500 Gold Certificates with Teehee-Burke signatures were issued, with the census today numbering 56 surviving examples. This example is near the upper reaches of the grade range with around ten notes with higher grades registered. The note's paper retains much of its original brightness and body along with clear margins and very good face-to-back registration. The colors still retain much of their original intensity. This note last sold in a public auction in 2022 when it garnered a price of $36,000 and we auctioned a comparably graded note for $33,600 as part of our 2023 Long Beach Expo U.S. Currency Signature Auction.
