Fr. 1216b $500 1882 Gold Certificate PMG Fine 12. The ink colors remain strong in spite of a fair degree of circulation. Real circulation, as opposed to bank handling, has a distinct "look". This note, along with others of its type, has clearly spent considerable time in actual circulation. The buying power of a $500 bill at the turn of the century was the equivalent of nearly $15,000 today, yet these notes were clearly carried and used at the time. Part of the answer lies in the fact that many large transactions that involve no cash at all today were in fact cash transactions between 1880 and 1920. In any event, this brightly colored, handsome $500 was out there at work for a number of years without incurring any problems save circulation wear.Auction Info
