Description

One of a Mere Five Available to Collectors

Fr. 1205 $100 1882 Gold Certificate PMG Choice Fine 15 Net.
Serial number C99358 is the highest of only eight serials listed in Track & Price for Fr. 1205. Even that low population figure is deceptively high as three of the eight now reside out of reach of collectors. That trio consists of two in the collection of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and a third note that calls the Smithsonian Institution home. The example in this lot was first recorded with the auction of The Jim Thompson Collection in 1990. We first offered it in January 1999 when it went under the gavel as part of the very advanced Dr. Lawrence Cookson Collection of Gold Certificates. Its last auction appearance until tonight was in 2013 when it received a winning bid of $34,500. In fact, that was the last auction appearance of any Fr. 1205 until 2025 when a PMG Very Fine 25 realized $108,000. Our current offering has been repaired and we see when the note is backlit or "candled" an approximately .75 inch sealed internal tear running from the "R" in "DOLLARS" into the "I" in "COIN." Nonetheless, it still remains only one of a mere five available to collectors.
