Description

Wholly Original and Rare 1882 $50 Gold Certificate

Fr. 1192 $50 1882 Gold Certificate PCGS Extremely Fine 45PPQ.
Silas Wright, who served in the House of Representatives (1827-29), United States Senate (1833-44), and as Governor of New York (1844-46) appears on this very rare note. The note is sharply printed on bright paper with excellent colors and decent margins. It is one of just 22 examples currently recorded in the Track & Price census. Of these, four are in institutional collections (the Federal Reserve Banks of Richmond, San Francisco (2), and the Smithsonian Institution) and thus unavailable to the collector market. As a point of reference, this note would easily outdistance all of the notes presently recorded in the PMG population numbers if it were to receive the equivalent grade from that service. A decade ago this note sold in a public sale for $188,000. Our conservative estimate will allow the market to determine its worth in today's environment.
