Fr. 1180 $20 1905 Gold Certificate PMG Superb Gem Unc 67
EPQ.Numismatic art on United States currency took major steps forward around the turn of the 20th Century. The Educational Series notes, Bison Legal Tenders, and the Onepapa Silver Certificates are regarded as a few of the most popular designs ever printed. Included in that numismatic Renaissance is the Series 1905 $20 Gold Certificates. The design followed a trend towards making the presidential portrait a more focal part of the layout, but it was the graduated hues of yellow and orange in the open areas of the note that made this design one of the top 10 according to 100 Greatest American Notes. The color is sometimes so captivating, especially in this grade, that the finer details of the scroll work and other design elements around the edges goes underappreciated. This offering is one of the finest survivors of this very popular issue as it is tied for the finest graded by either major service. The margins here are not seen any larger for the type, and the colors are the epitome of perfection, a glimpse into the BEP on the day it was printed. It is certainly the equal, if not finer, than the PCGS Banknote 67 PPQ example that we auctioned three years ago for $81,000.
