Description

Near-Gem 1882 $20 Gold Certificate with Vivid Color

Fr. 1178 $20 1882 Gold Certificate PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
Broadly margined and printed on bright white paper with excellent serial number embossing, this striking C plate 1882 $20 Gold's highlight is undoubtedly its vibrant orange back. While the orange back on notes of this series tend to fade, oxidize, or otherwise discolor, this representative bears a back which retains much, if not all, of its original eye appeal and color. This note's design serves as a memorial of sorts to President James Garfield, whose portrait appears at far right. Garfield was assassinated just months before this note was emitted by one Charles J. Guiteau in September 1881. We have auctioned very few Fr. 1178 examples at this grade level over the years. In January 2023, we presented a PCGS Banknote CU 64 Details encapsulated representative with minor masking which garnered $19,200. As our current offering is happily free of any meaningful condition impairments, we could very well see that figure exceeded tonight.
