Description

Entirely Original Serial Number 1 San Francisco $100 Red Seal FRN

Serial Number 1 Fr. 1083a $100 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.
The last note of this extraordinary offering of historic San Francisco Serial Number 1 notes is in this lot. Four other Serial Number 1 Red Seal $100s are reported, with two examples from the New York and Chicago districts being held by the ANA Museum and the collection of the San Francisco FRB respectively. The Richmond example grades PCGS Fine 15 with comments and realized $55,200 in our April 2018 CSNS auction. The fourth note is on Philadelphia. It grades PMG 64 with comments and brought $156,000 at auction in 2020. The beautiful Serial Number 1 San Francisco example in this lot is entirely original with ideal color, embossing, and a large amount of natural paper wrinkles from the drying process. Once again it is the sole finest for the Friedberg number for both Track & Price and PMG. Two determined bidders drove the winning bid to over $218,000 when we last offered it in April 2011. It will easily become the centerpiece of the next collection it enters, and, like all of these magnificent Serial Number 1 examples, is certain to delight its very fortunate new owner.
