Charming $20 Boston Red Seal FRN Tied for Finest Known
Fr. 952b $20 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note PMG Extremely
Fine 40.The Track & Price Census offers important insight into the true rarity of this lovely piece. A grand total of six examples of this number have been recorded in T&P, with just two representatives of that count achieving a grade above VF. Those two representatives include our current offering and another note which was once a part of the landmark Thomas M. Flynn collection. Both of these notes, which are tied for finest known for this Friedberg number, achieved the XF 40 grade level. The PMG Population Report offers similar figures, as these same two notes are graded by the firm and thus tied for finest encapsulated by PMG. When we turn our attention to all Red Seal $20 FRN numbers, we uncover that this Friedberg number is actually tied with Fr. 960b for the rarest of all $20 Red Seal FRNs. In fact, at six notes reported for each number, these two variations enumerate population figures which are lower than any other $5, $10, or $20 Red Seal FRN. Natural paper wave, rich dark green back and bright red overprint ink colors, and little evidence of circulation highlight this stunning piece. We have only auctioned two examples of this number prior to now, with one of those notes being the aforementioned Thomas M. Flynn note which most recently achieved $31,200 in October 2025. Our conservative estimate should be outdistanced tonight for this great rarity in splendid condition.
