Description

Finest Known $100 1914 Red Seal Boston FRN

Fr. 1072a $100 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note PMG Superb Gem Unc 67 EPQ.
A spectacular, virtually perfect, $100 1914 Red Seal FRN, this example has been alone in the "top pop" position of both the old PCGS and PMG population reports for the better part of two decades. Until the appearance of a small run of spectacular Boston Red Seal Hundreds on the market, this was a type that had been unavailable in Gem condition to most collectors, as fewer than ten Uncirculated examples had been known for all districts combined. In the mid-1980's, this note appeared at the Memphis show as part of an 18-note consecutive run. It is deeply embossed, beautifully bright, and perfect in both the technical and visual contexts. This note last sold over a decade ago in 2012 when it brought $74,750. The PMG 66 EPQ and PCGS 66PPQ examples from this same run have brought between $21,600 and $40,800 within the last twelve months. Given the longevity of this example as a "top pop" note, we believe that our conservative estimate will likely be tested or bested tonight.
