Description

Extraordinary St. Louis $50 Red Seal FRN

Fr. 1019b $50 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The 1914 FRNs and FRBNs both served as de facto commemoratives recognizing the opening of the Panama Canal in August 1914 with a vignette of an allegorical woman representing Panama on the back. A mere 16,000 Red Seal $50s were printed for the St. Louis district. Today the census records twenty known survivors and this example enjoys the "top pop" position in both the census and in the PMG Population Report. This note traces its provenance back to the landmark Thomas M. Flynn collection and is truly a pristine example with bright paper, vibrant colors and well-matched margins and face-to-back registration. We last auctioned this note for $20,400 in our 2024 CSNS U.S. Currency Signature Auction.
