Description

Cleveland District Serial Number D1A $5 Federal Reserve Bank Note

Fr. 785 $5 1918 Federal Reserve Bank Note PCGS Choice About New 58.
An absolutely gorgeous serial number one example with an illustrious numismatic history. It originally appeared as part of Barney Bluestone's sale of the Grinnell Collection in June 1946. After that, it was again on the market in 1952 on a fixed price list. It disappeared for nearly forty years, resurfacing again in 1991 in the Jim Thompson auction. Its final appearance until now was in the May 1995 sale of the Andrew Shiva type note collection. The note is beautifully margined, with fresh original embossing, not only of the all-important single digit serial number but most all of the design elements. To our best knowledge, only two serial number one notes exist for the $5 Federal Reserve Bank Note series. This Cleveland example, and an Atlanta example which was the top note in a serial number one through four uncut sheet that auctioned in 1991, current whereabouts unknown to us. The uncut sheet of Atlanta notes was graded extremely fine in its only auction appearance. While we have not examined the Atlanta note, we presume the grade to be accurate, making this the finest graded example of the only two known serial number one FRBN $5 notes.
