Description
Magnificent Boston Battleship Deuce
Fr. 749 $2 1918 Federal Reserve Bank Note PCGS Banknote Gem Unc
66 PPQ.A magnificent, broad margined, and well embossed Boston Battleship Deuce, this piece features serial number A11687917A that we can trace back to The Willis O. Crosswhite Collection. Mr. Crosswhite was elected president of the Cincinnati Numismatic Association in 1934. He died in 1948 and his collection was auctioned on April 24, 1954 by New Netherlands Coin Co. He is the main United States paper money consignor for this outstanding sale of the 1950s. This $2 was lot 480 with the serial number listed in the description. The note was catalogued as possessing "attractive margins." Its next auction appearance did not occur until our October 1995 St. Louis auction where it was lot 1571. We described it then as being "very bright and with extraordinary margins." Today, it is the highest graded Fr. 749 by itself at PCGS Banknote. A look at the PMG Population Report finds that they have graded only two Fr. 749 notes equal with none higher. This is simply a great note in this lot and one of the finest for the type.
