Description

Excessively Rare $10,000 Treasury of the United States War Warrant

Fr. UNL Hessler X112D $10,000 184_ Treasury of the United States War Warrant First Draft Mexican Indemnity Stock Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
We have never before offered this rare design, which is the highest denomination of the four prepared for the issue. PMG incorrectly states that this bond is unlisted in Hessler's An Illustrated History of U.S. Loans 1775-1898, however, it can be found on pages 140-42 of that reference. This issue was known as Mexican Indemnity Stock. The 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo terms were not met and American citizens were not paid their claims. The United States government agreed to pay their citizens' claims, and by accepting this warrant as payment, claimants relinquished all further claims. Hessler gives it his highest rarity rating of R8, 1-3 known. It was printed on India paper by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New York. It has two POCs and is mounted on cardstock. There is no denying that this is a very rare fiscal instrument.
