R8 $100 Treasury of the United States Warrant
Fr. UNL Hessler X112A $100 184_ Registered 1847 Treasury of the
United States Warrant Mexican Indemnity Stock Proof PMG Choice
Uncirculated 63.A rare design that has escaped us until now. This is the lowest denomination of the four ($100, $500, $1,000 and $10,000) prepared for the Mexican Indemnity Stock issue that is listed on pages 140-42 in Gene Hessler's An Illustrated History of U.S. Loans 1775-1898. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo officially ended the Mexican-American War of 1846-48. It was signed in the town of Guadalupe Hidalgo on February 2, 1848. After the fall of Mexico City and the defeat of the Mexican Army, peace negotiations with the United States began. The treaty required Mexico to cede 55% of its territory, drop all claims for Texas, and recognize the Rio Grande as the southern boundary of Texas. The United States paid Mexico $15 million for the land and Mexico agreed to pay debts owed to American citizens.
The treaty's terms were not met as American citizens were not paid their claims. The United States government agreed to pay their citizens' claims and claimants relinquished all further claims by accepting this issue as payment. The $100 denomination has Hessler's highest rarity rating of R8, 1-3 known. It was printed on India paper by Rawdon, Wright, & Hatch, New York. It is mounted on cardstock and has a single POC through the warrant and not the cardstock. This is another rare and desirable example from our consignor's excellent collection.
