Description

Unknown in Issued Form Fr. 210 $1,000 1861 Face Proof

Fr. 210 Hessler X129J (1396) $1,000 1861 Interest Bearing Note Face Proof with Five Coupons Attached PCGS New 62.
Friedberg 210 is unknown in issued form (three remain outstanding according to Hessler) and only a few Proofs/Specimens of this design have crossed the auction block over the years, including an India paper uniface sheet of three with plate letters A, B, and C that was sold by Mayflower in 1974, subsequently cut up, and auctioned individually in 1984 by NASCA. The plate letter C Face Proof with four POCs in this lot is the bottom note from that cut up uniface sheet. Hessler number X129J is found on pages 87 and 88 of the second edition of U.S. Essay, Proof and Specimen Notes, while Hessler 1396 is on page 218 of An Illustrated History of U.S. Loans 1775-1898.

This ABNCo printed example has retained its dark inks and white paper. The portrait is of Salmon P. Chase, who was the 25th Secretary of the Treasury from March 7, 1861, to June 30, 1864. This makes this design one of the few that carried a portrait of a living person. It has its full complement of five attached coupons. This plate letter C example has four POCs in the signature areas, while in this case, each coupon is free of POCs. The overall dimensions of the note, including coupons, is approximately 10.75 by 4 inches. We auctioned this item originally in January 2007 for $19,550. Our consignor acquired it at auction in 2018 for $22,800 out of The Joel R. Anderson Collection. This example has several vertical folds and small edge splits that have been repaired. There is also a penciled annotation on the back, near the right edge. That is said to be the cost code of a previous owner, Dr. Glenn Jackson, who was inducted into the Society of Paper Money Collectors Hall of Fame in 2022.
