Description
Unique Fr. 199 Proof With Serial Number
Fr. 199 $100 18(63) Interest Bearing Note PMG Choice
Uncirculated 64.Front Proof Hessler ITE14 Hessler X137D; Back Proof Hessler 1140 Hessler X137D.
A beautiful plate letter D ABNCo printed Front Proof, this piece is printed on India paper and mounted on cardstock. The same is also true for the Back Proof in this lot. Neither example has been cancelled. The slightly misaligned first "0" in the "00000" serial number identifies the Front Proof in this lot as the plate note on page 67 of U.S. Essay, Proof and Specimen Notes second edition by Gene Hessler. The first Hessler numbers are from this 2004 reference, while the second Hessler number of X137D is from his 1988 reference book entitled, An Illustrated History of U.S. Loans 1775-1898. The 2004 reference lists a total of four Front Proofs spread amongst plate letters A, B, or C. The only plate letter D Front Proof and the only one with a serial number is our current offering making it unique.
The Front Proof in this lot has a partially engraved date, displays a dark green protector guilloche, and two dark green C counters. The Guardian vignette at left has a shield that reads, "In God Is Our Trust," the central vignette is of George Washington, and the vignette at right is of Justice. The latter is found on Third Issue 50¢ Fractionals. There are only three known Fr. 199 issued notes, one of which has never been offered, making this Proof pair an excellent choice for acquiring this rare Friedberg number without spending the six figures necessary to obtain an issued example.
We auctioned a joined punch cancelled Front and Back Proof pair without a serial number that had been damaged and graded PCGS Banknote Uncirculated 62 in January 2024. It realized $26,400 on a $25,000 and up estimate. Our current offering has a serial number, a higher grade, is not damaged, is not cancelled, and is two Proof notes. With all that in mind, look for this example to top the price realized last January.
This note has been mis-identified by PMG as a Compound Interest Treasury Note. PMG will correct this mechanical error at no charge to the new owner. (Total: 2 notes)
