One of Two Fr. 1221 Face Proofs Known
Fr. 1221 Hessler UNL $5,000 1882 Gold Certificate Face Proof
PCGS Gem New 65PPQ.This $5,000 design with James Madison's portrait is not plated in Hessler's second edition of U.S. Essay, Proof and Specimen Notes, but we have come to the conclusion that the Face Proof in this lot is similar to Hessler 1451a on page 223, but the piece in this lot lacks a plate letter. There is only a single example of Hessler 1451a listed, and it is part of the BEP archives. We did read that there is another example of this Face Proof, but it has been off the market for some time. Therefore, the piece in this lot is probably one of two available for collectors. The piece in this lot is printed on India paper and mounted on broad margined bonded paper measuring overall approximately ten by nine inches. The black ink design elements are present save for a plate letter. Six-digit all zero serial numbers were perforated at both lower left and upper right. The "Bureau, Engraving & Printing" imprint is at lower center and the engraved signatures are of Register of the Treasury B.K. Bruce and Treasurer of the United States Jas. Gilfillan.
This Face Proof is of an extremely rare Friedberg design encompassing Fr. 1221-1221j numbers. Of those numbers, all are unknown in issued form except for two documented Fr. 1221j notes. One of those two examples is in the collection of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, while the other has never been publicly offered. Therefore, in order to satisfy any desire for this design, one must consider this Face Proof that was previously in The Joel R. Anderson Collection.
