Artist's Renditions of Legal Tender Notes
United States Treasury Artist's Rendition of Legal Tender Denominations Ca. 1908-1909This is the first of three sets of notes to be offered here this evening that were once part of the estate of Louis A. Coolidge, Assistant Treasurer of the United States from 1908-1909. Each set includes a Treasury Department envelope with penned descriptions of the contents. In this case, someone wrote:

The hand drawn notes show only the basics of each design, with verbal descriptions of the vignettes. Included in this set are basic hand drawn representations of the follow Legal Tenders:
Fr. 83-92 $5 1907 Legal Tender
Fr. 114-122 $10 1901 Legal Tender
Fr. 140-147 $20 1880 Legal Tender
Fr. 162-164 $50 1880 Legal Tender
Fr. 179-182 $100 1880 Legal Tender
Fr. 185b-c $500 1875 Legal Tender
Fr. 187g-l $1,000 1880 Legal Tender
We surmise that these pieces were quickly hand-drawn to save the printers from having to pull plates and create full proofs for quick reference. PMG does not assign grades as they are artist's renditions. With that in mind, there will be no returns for any reason. Were it not for the illustrious pedigree that comes with these notes, it would have been anyone's guess as to the time period they were drawn and no information could have linked them directly back to the Treasury. Since we have never seen anything like these, they will be offered without estimate. (Total: 9 items)
