Description
Ten Note Federal Reserve Proof Presentation Set. We sold this set previously in our June 1994 Memphis sale. At that time, we described it as: "A set of five faces and five backs of the $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 Series of 1914 Red Seals. Mounted in a large cardboard mat and presented to the Director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Joseph G. Ralph, by Secretary of the Treasury W.G. McAdoo on December 21, 1914. The cardboard display frame contains the signed inscription of presentation along with a second hand written description where Director Ralph re-presents the item to a J.W. Sullivan. Four of these sets can be traced at present, each presented by Secretary McAdoo to a different dignitary. Each of the sets is composed of proof faces and backs with the red seal and straight-zero red serial numbers pasted on. This set has nine evenly aged notes with the tenth note (the back of the $100 denomination) showing no trace of aging. Each of the known sets has a similar mixture of aged and bright notes, and they were originally given in this form. This is one of the few instances where Proof notes formally left the Bureau. A magnificent display item." Since its previous sale, the new owner has had it magnificently framed with a custom dark green mat. The frame itself appears to be some form of exotic Southeast Asian burl--we've given up on the dizzying wood grain chart, but we will pass the website address on to the successful bidder upon request. In any event, the wood is simply gorgeous, and complements this magnificent set. In 1994, this set realized $7975. Over the past 15 years, interest in Proof notes has increased geometrically, and this magnificent presentation set will bring multiples of that amount tonight.Auction Info
