$10 Cincinnati Demand Note PMG 25 - Top Pop at Both Services Combined

Fr. 9 $10 1861 Demand Note PMG Very Fine 25.
We are now selling this note for the fourth time, most recently January of 2014, when we used the following description, "This lovely and finest known example comes from a long held hoard passed down generation after generation since the Civil War. At this time only five notes are recorded in the Gengerke census for this elusive Greenback with one example forever ensconced in the ANA Museum. One note was last offered 17 years ago, while another has appeared at auction three times since 1992, last appearing ten years ago. The whereabouts of the other two are unknown, though serial numbers are listed. PMG has commented about splits and the bank stamp on the back which is difficult to make out, but the origin is Cincinnati, O. Since these Greenbacks were relatively new, perhaps merchants and businesses accepting these new government issues placed their 'stamp of approval' on them. Without the minor flaws noted this rarity could bring a six figure price, but expect a realization this evening in the area of..." In its first offering in 2008, there were more high-end collectors competing for notes. We felt that a six figure price was out of reach, but were pleased and surprised when the note hammered for the price of $172,500. Presently one additional note has been added to the census, bringing the total to six. This note is still at the top of the population reports. The number of collectors pursuing six-figure rarities has declined. We feel that a six-figure price is likely out of reach, though we have been very wrong on that account before. Conservatively estimating, we are certain this incredible rarity will reach and likely exceed $60,000.
