Description

One of Six Known Face and Three Known Back Philadelphia $10 Demand Note Proofs

Fr. 7 Hessler 463C $10 1861 Demand Note Face and Back Proofs PCGS Choice About New 55; PCGS New 62.
This lot comprises ABNCo Face and Back Proofs for the 1861 $10 Demand Note. The face, featuring vignettes of an eagle and shield and an allegorical woman representing The Arts as well as a large portrait of Abraham Lincoln, is boldly printed. Serial number 00000 is printed in red ink on this plate letter A example payable at Philadelphia and with "for the" printed before the Treasury officials' titles. The decorative green back is also boldly printed. Both Proofs are printed on India paper. The face has four POCs in the signature lines as well as a smaller one in the top edge and both Proofs have mounting remnants on the back with minor stains also mentioned on the Back Proof. Hessler lists Five Face Proofs and two Back Proofs on page 22 of his second edition of U.S. Essay, Proof and Specimen Notes. Because the Face Proof has fewer POCs and neither of these Proofs is mounted on cardstock, they are both believed to be new additions to the previous census. (Total: 2 notes)
