Description

Ex: Grinnell, Schermerhorn, Bass $5 Cincinnati Demand Note

Fr. 4 $5 1861 Demand Note PMG Fine 12.
A scant eight correct issued serial numbers are listed in Track & Price for Fr. 4 which has "for the" printed before the Treasury Department offices. Also, there are still no known examples of handwritten "for the" Cincinnati $5 Demand Notes. The example in this lot has serial number 4961-A, which makes it the lowest serial number known on this Friedberg number. It also has a distinguished provenance as it was previously in the collections of Albert Grinnell, Dallas oilman Robert Schermerhorn, and Dallas businessman and philanthropist Harry Bass. This is an evenly circulated example that has been able to retain its signatures. PMG has graded six Fr. 4 notes, two are graded lower than the piece in this lot, while three others are graded equal. The last example that we auctioned was in May 2023 and that PMG Fine 12 example with tape repairs brought $16,800. Our current offering has had minor repairs. They were all skillfully executed and require the note to be backlit in order to have any hope of pinpointing them. The Fr. 4 in this lot may easily surpass our last offering due to the less intrusive nature of its well concealed repairs.

Estimate: $15,000 - up.
