Description
Extremely Rare Cincinnati $5 Demand Note - One of Only Seven Known
Fr. 4 $5 1861 Demand Note PMG Fine 12.To date, only seven reported survivors are known of this scarce Friedberg number. The note was payable at the Cincinnati Treasury Office and with no "for the" varieties known to collectors, it is the scarcest of the different locales engraved on the 1861 $5 Demand notes. This Fine 12 example is tied for the highest graded at either service. There was a report of a higher grade piece over 30 years ago, but it has yet to resurface. PMG has noted some minor staining and a missing corner tip but those minor flaws are of little to no importance on a note of this rarity. The colors remain wonderfully strong and both signatures are well applied, dark and fully legible. Friedberg states that, "the green reverses of the Demand Notes are the origin of the term 'Greenback' as applied to U.S. paper money in general." An important opportunity for anyone attempting a Friedberg number set or a collector with a simple appreciation for extreme rarity.
