Description

Fr. 3 $5 1861 Demand Note PMG Very Good 10.
Payable in Boston, this $5 was part of the first and earliest issue of United States paper money as we know it today. Released to the public on August 26, 1861, these notes were receivable in payment of all public dues including import duties. This made these notes very popular with those paying such duties as they had traditionally been collected in the form of gold coin. This note, which has a vignette of Crawford's Freedom and a portrait of Alexander Hamilton as well as an intricate green back (thus the term "Green Backs") has some repaired tears noted.
