Description

Bright, Evenly Circulated Boston $5 Demand Note

Fr. 3 $5 1861 Demand Note PMG Very Fine 25.
Part of the very first issue of US paper money, this 1861 Demand Note was authorized as part of the Acts of July 17 and August 5, 1861, as well as of February 12, 1862. Payable at Boston, our current offering showcases an ornate green back from which the nickname "Greenback" originated. The Track & Price Census records 123 examples of this number, with this piece being a new addition to that count, but only 16 representatives have achieved a grade higher than the VF 25 level. PMG mentions that this piece has been repaired at upper right, and a split is also located at lower center.

Estimate: $4,000 - up.
