Boston PMG VF 25 Demand Note
Fr. 3 $5 1861 Demand Note PMG Very Fine 25.A nice representative for the grade of VF 25, this offering made its first public appearance at a 1982 auction. PMG has commented that this Boston issued Series 5 note has been repaired. There are a few sealed small edge splits, two small holes close to the right edge have been filled in, and a replaced upper right corner tip. The repairs were executed with skill and can only be observed when the note is candled/backlit. The inks are quite nice for the grade and the penned signatures are present with the "for the Register" signature being dark and clear and the "for the Treasurer" less so, but still legible. Demand Notes were issued at the beginning of the Civil War and saw extensive circulation. They are hard to find without third party comments, too. PMG has graded 57 Fr. 3 notes with only eight examples graded higher than our current offering.
