Description

Five Dollar Philadelphia Demand Note Tied for Second-Finest Known at Both Services Combined

Fr. 2 $5 1861 Demand Note PMG Extremely Fine 40.
A very nice looking Demand Note with exceptional color, better than average margins and strong legible pen signatures. There is only a single uncirculated example known, which is a 65 and sold for $372,000 in 2018. The year prior to that, this lovely XF40 realized $18,800. That figure could easily be surpassed this evening. Save for the 65 mentioned above, this problem-free 40 is the highest graded Friedberg 2 at PMG. In fact, PCGS has graded only a single 40, with nothing higher. That makes this note tied for second with one other. Needless to say, a true rarity at this grade level.
