Lovely, High Grade $5 Demand Note
Fr. 1 $5 1861 Demand Note PMG About Uncirculated 50 EPQ.This note is an old friend. We previously sold it in January of 1996, graded Choice About New, with the following description: "The finest Demand Note bar none that we have had the pleasure of handling. Of the approximately one hundred known, only three can compare with this piece. Well margined and bright, with hand signatures that appear to have been applied yesterday, this note exhibits not a hint of a problem. It is in fact the only Demand Note we have ever seen that retains its full original embossing effect. We have always considered all Demand Notes undervalued, and we consider this note way up in the top half-dozen Demand Notes of any city of issue or denomination." In the intervening 24 years, PMG has graded two other pieces at the 53 and 55 level but only this note, of those three, has received the coveted EPQ designation for fully original paper. Both of the signatures are dark and clear, the colors are terrific, and the margins, though not perfectly even, are primarily huge and free of the frameline at even their closest point. This is a great note fit for the finest of collections.
